Notice About Forest Excise Tax

Forest excise tax may be due to the Washington State Department of Revenue after trees are removed.

If your permit is approved, a copy will be sent to the Department of Revenue. The Department will determine whether tax may be due. If yes, the Department will mail tax reporting forms and instructions to you. These forms can either be completed by mail or online.

If required, the property owner (timber owner) is responsible for obtaining a Forest Tax Reporting Account Number, completing the tax reporting forms, and paying any taxes due.

  • To learn more about the Forest Excise Tax, visit: https://dor.wa.gov/taxes-rates/other-taxes/forest-tax

  • To obtain a Forest Excise Tax Reporting Account Number or for general questions, call the Department of Revenue at (360) 534-1324.

  • To review the Small Harvester Forest Excise Tax Return (applicable to most Clearing / Tree Removal Permit applications in Bonney Lake), visit: https://dor.wa.gov/sites/default/files/2022-02/SmallHarvFTTxRtrn.pdf

  • Certain costs are deductible, while others are not. Track your costs separately to simplify the tax return process.

  • For specific questions about how to complete the return, please contact Revenue Forester Aileen Liu at (360) 819-3123 or aileenl@dor.wa.gov
